I went to the races this past Saturday (H.O.G. appreciation). This was my first time ever to a flat track. WOW.
Looks like fun. Reminds me of some of the mid west short tracks we used to go to run stock cars. Family oriented small town feel and friendly people.
I've been getting my 10 year old started on a 50 recently and that got me thinking...
I have checked out the web site and such but didn't find any getting started info, hence this post.
So I'm a 50 year old guy that has ridden a dirt bike about 10 times in the last 10 years. Back when I was young and thin and had hair I was a mid pack road racer with a big smile on my face. I ran AFM for a couple seasons (1983ish).
I'm thinking it might be fun to be a 50 yr old mid pack flat tracker with a big smile on my face. Hope someone here could point me in the right direction.
I have a couple old bikes that might be a good place to start. First a bone stock 1985 xr600 that is really nice and I'm thinking not a good beginners bike. I also have a stock 94 xr80. The 80 is small but the most fun per dollar ever. Downside is I'm 6 foot 4.
My 10 year old has an xr50. He is 10 but has only been riding about a year.
Can we get started with these? Or have you any suggestions? What classes should we look at? Can we get everything we need, licenses and such at the track?
Thank You in advance,
Chris

May I humbly suggest Hollister Hills SVRA to start with. Find your way to the (excellent) TT track, and try to do this on a Saturday morning. You will find some older fellas there; some are retired pros, and some are still racing. It's knobbies out there, not expensive dirt track rubber. And there are no cards, no classes, no entry fees, and no rules. For a $5 day use fee (per car) you will be able to measure the abilities of your bikes and riders against what you might find in a sanctioned race. And you can ride all you want. (Rat Pack)

I went to Hollister yesterday. What a great place. We had quite alot of fun. I was with my older son on his new (to him) xr250. Spent most of the day getting him comfortable. I did get a chance to take the old 600 around the excellent TT track. The 600 was a bit of a handful but it was lots of fun. We will be back for more! Thank you for the suggestion Blair.
